Today I had the opportunity to help out with the Academic Excellence Convocation. I didn't really have a big job because my job was to show certain people to their seat and the majority of them didn't show up, but I thought it was a fun event to work especially because several of the FPA participated. I would defiantly participate in this event next year.

Let me see…things on “my bucket list”….page 2, page 3, page 250 – Attend a poetry reading! There it is …much to my surprise. Maybe because of the genres of literature, poetry usually finishes close to last; maybe because in my technical way of thinking, poetry is just a bit too abstract; or maybe I just never thought of poetry as being entertaining. Man, was I wrong and would I have robbed myself of a great evening of entertainment had I not attended. On Wednesday April 12, the Fine and Performing Arts students attended Ishion Hutchison’s poetry reading in the Reece Museum. The small intimate space was perfect for the event. The 50+ member audience was the perfect size and the hosts worked diligently to make the event both personal and fun. My only regret is that I could not stay until the end; my friends made it a point to tell me how much they enjoyed the food. I have always said a venue could make or break an event. If the venue is too nice, you look out of your league; if your venue is not nice enough you look out of your league; this venue was perfect. (I think I just plagiarized Goldie Locks and the Three Bears.)
I thought the event was a success. While I may not have been a huge fan of poetry, listening to Mr. Hutchinson reading his poetry has me rethinking that position. I felt Mr. Hutchinson’s compelling performance augmented my understanding of the poetry. His voice transported the listener to the place where he grew up, and provided a dimension of reality that authenticated his work. It allowed the listener to experience the poem as the writer intended. I do wish I had made the time to read and analyze the poems before the event. Jesse Graves’ introduction of the author was also effective and enjoyable. It was endearing to hear how Jesse respected and in a way idolized Mr. Hutchison. The small town, their history, and the mutual appreciation they have for one another not only made us feel closer to the author, but also gave us understanding of the poems. More than any other part of the evening, this was when the evening began to feel “rich” and well worth the time. This dynamic experience certainly changed how I will look at poetry in the future. No longer, will it be flat and one-dimensional grouping of words riddled with hidden meanings and words that sometimes mean three things all at the same time. Now when I read poetry, I will pause where the writer would pause; I will appreciate the hard work of the poet in crafting each phrase, and I will accept the “complicated simplicity” of the poem. In conclusion - Since I enjoyed #250 on my bucket list I think I will go try out #251, and next time I am clearing my calendar and staying for the food at the end. I got the opportunity to see the wonderful production of "Five Women Wearing the Same Dress" in the blackbox theatre on East Tennessee State University's campus. Five Women Wearing the Same Dress was written by Alan Ball and was directed by Bobby Funk. I thought was a complete success, and that was obvious knowing that each performance was sold out.
I thought all the acting was amazing. I also thought that the entire production team worked in concert to create this wonderful play. I liked how the design team took a more realistic view of the show. This was evident through Grace Arrowood's scenic design, which was the girl's room all the way down to the posters hanging on the wall. I would love to see this play again. Today I had the opportunity to go and play with the cats and dogs of the animal shelter. I absolutely loved it , though I did really want to take all the pets home. I unfortunately live in a dorm and animals aren't allowed. I didn't really know that you were allowed to go and play with all the animals. It was a nice discovery. I would defiantly want to go and do more with the shelter in the future. I think 3 hours wasn't enough, I defiantly want to go back
Its hard to know where we be in ten years, but almost everyone atleast has 5 goals they would like to accomplish in the next 10 years. In the next ten years my goals are completeling college with a decent grade, finding a job that I truely love to do, Trying to get my certification to teach aerobics classes, Trying something I normal wouldn't like a health food, and continuing to try an make a mark in the artist community. These are all goals for the next 10 years, but I also have sort term goals like in the next year I would like to try to not start a new netflix series the week before finals, I failed this one this semester.
I had the opportunity to go to the Fall Semester Band Concert featuring the ETSU Wind Ensemble. I was told ahead of time that it wasn't going to be very good, so I was pleasantly surprised. I thought that Joe D. Moore and Christian Zembower were great conductors for the musical event. I really enjoyed their opening number of the "Havendance". The song really set the stage for it being an upbeat winter concert. I also enjoyed the "Baron Cimetiere's Mambo" which was a song in the second act of the performance. It was defiantly an interesting song, but I thought that it seemed out of place for the winter show. I also found it interesting that Joe D. Moore conducted this piece and this was the only piece he conducted. I thought that this music sounded very similar to the Adams Family. I think I would have taken that song out just because it was so different from the rest of the music being played. Though I thought the song was out of place I did enjoy it. Though my favorite part of the concert was the finale song. This song wasn't even in the program, but I thought it was a nice touch for the end of a winter concert. They played "Sleigh Bells" which I believe should be the ending for every winter show. I always find it amazing that you sing the words in your head even if your just listening to the music. I really did enjoy the performance put on by ETSU wind ensemble.
I had the opportunity volunteer with Children's hospital this weekend it was a lot of fun.We were helping out with the main winter event for Knoxville being Fantasy of Trees where all the proceeds made from the event go to Children's Hospital. A few of us went down to decorate one of the 7 foot trees for a local group that helps with mentally disabled children. They are called STARS. We decorated a tree for probably 5 to 6 hours. it was a lot of fun. We decorated a ski tree which we thought was amazing. I did manage to make it look like a moose was sliding down the tree which I believe is a win on any day of the week. I have enjoyed helping with the children's hospital's main fundraising event of the year for the past three years. Its always a joy to see all the trees once they are all finished. Its fun knowing the the money raised from the trees goes to a great cause. I am definatly looking forward to participating in next year's Fantasy of Trees.
Łukasz Mirocha gave a lecture on digital art. It was very interesting he started to talk about how there is art in glitches. It was so interesting he showed us images of media that had glitches in them. Most of them shown looked like works of art. He would show google map images that were taking and were in some way or another distorted. They were really amazing to look at some had roads that looked like roller coasters while others were just interesting to look at. I also had the opportunity to go to his lecture the day before this lecture and I found that very interesting. I found that his stories of travel made the second lecture even more interesting. I went into the lecture thinking it would be probably boring, but it did end up being very entertaining. I also think a good part of the entertainment was the discussions going on between the speaker and Scott Koterbay. I really did enjoy his presentation and his argument that glitches can be art.
Today we went to the Barter Theatre to see on of their productions of "Something Wicked This Way Comes". Ray Bradbury wrote the play but Richard Rose directed it. I thought the play was very interesting, even though I didn't Particularly care for it. It seemed liked everyone that truly like it had read the book before hand. So I might read it later to see if the play makes any more sense to me. The thing that I was honestly interested in their use of pyrotechnics through out the show. I sure this stems from my work with pyrotechnics for a theatre in West Virginia. The main thing that impressed me was the sheer amount they had done with the flash paper and smoke bombs. This surprised me because I have worked at an outdoor theatre, and I can't even imagine how dangerous it is to do pyrotechnics inside of an enclosed building. Not to mention all the documents I'm sure you need to do pyro inside. I also enjoyed the set. I probably wouldn't have been as amazed with it but we got to stay after and watch them take it apart. I always enjoy being able to see the interworking of a set. I didn't like the show entirely, but I did find the technical aspect of the show to be amazing.
I had the privilege of going to Go Contemporary Dnce Works production of Transcendance. Dance being the optimal part of that word. Lisa Hall Mckee ( The Artist Director) said that she wants this show to transcend what you believe that dance should be. I really enjoyed this show, but the only reason I truly knew about it was because I had been a dancer in the company since I was 12.I wish that this event was better known of because its amazing what Go can do with their contemporary dance style. This was the first year I was not in the show or helping with it in some form or fashion. I really enjoy getting to sit back and see and the detection that I know each one of the dancers on the stage had put into the show. I enjoyed all the pieces there was, of course their was some pieces that where better pieces than others but that is what always happens when you have more that one piece and several different choreographers. I really enjoyed the crowned jewel of the performance which was the last piece in the performance, it was about Adam, Eve, and the forbidden fruit. It amazing how dance can bring so many emotions of a subject into a speechless spectacle that if it could be decided in one word it would be Transcendance.

AuthorI'm Katheryn Patton but I go by Kate. I have always been an overachiever in everything that I do and I believe my catch phrase is "I can learn". I have worked in almost every aspect of a theatre and loved it. |
